Freedom of Religion vs. Health Care
A policy in debate currently is a policy on everyone paying for birth control coverage. However, birth control is against certain religious beliefs, such as those of Christians. Therefore, President Barack Obama has proposed a compromise: Churches and certain religiously affiliated hospitals, universities, and other organizations do not have to pay directly for birth control coverage. Instead of these groups paying for the coverage, health insurance companies would be paying. This proposal would keep Freedom of Religion whilst still having birth control coverage paid for.
The connection between this event and the Ideal of Liberty is Freedom of Religion. Liberty means Freedom, and one of the Liberties in the First Amendment is Freedom of Religion. The original proposal of everyone having to pay for birth control coverage brings America farther from Freedom of Religion, and therefore the Ideal of Liberty. On the other hand, the new compromise brings America closer to the Ideal of Liberty.
